Twelve-year-old Sean Glaholt’s artwork will be worn on thousands of lapels this holiday season. The winner of this year’s city Christmas pin design contest drew a Polar Express scene under a starry night sky.
“I was amazed,” he said, when he learned he was the winner.
There were more than 100 applicants this year.
“I didn’t even try,” Glaholt said. He was one of the first students to complete the Christmas-themed drawing.
He found out during the middle of a spelling test. Both Mayor Duane Evenson and the Mayor’s Art Council chose this year’s winner from participating sixth-graders in Gillette.
“I’ve had kids enter before and never win,” said Ginger Cassidy, Glaholt’s art teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School.
This is the sixth year of the city’s Christmas pin contest. It’s a good way to involve students and spread the holiday spirit, said Councilwoman Louise Carter-King.
Glaholt pocketed $50 in cash for winning, but he hasn’t decided what he’ll do with the prize money.
In addition, Hillcrest Elementary received $150.
About 4,500 Christmas pins were made this year, costing the city $3,926.
The Christmas pins are free and available in the administration offices on the third floor of City Hall.
