Sheriff's investigators are confident that there is no threat to schools or the public after a man was shot at a gravel pit Thursday morning along Fairview Road.

For a short time after the incident was reported, two Campbell County School District elementary schools were put on alert and instructed to "shelter in place" because of their proximity to the location of the shooting, according to Boyd Brown, associate superintendant for instruction.

That level of alert implemented at Rozet Elementary and Conestoga Elementary kept children inside the schools, but allowed parents access to them.

Brown explained that officials decided to keep students inside at those schools until deputies told them that the incident was under control.

The man, a 19-year-old, called deputies at 9:19 a.m. Thursday to report that he had been shot by another man that he confronted at a gravel pit east of Gillette, Undersheriff Scott Matheny said.

The man was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his stomach.

"He stated that he confronted a person at the pit and that person produced a weapon and shot him," Matheny said. "We don't believe anybody is in any danger at this point."

Deputies do not have a suspect in custody, he said, but "deputies are confident that there is no threat to schools from this incident."

Investigators who responded to the incident reported that they found at least three guns inside the victim's vehicle.

The man explained that the alleged shooter drove away from the area in a red or rust-colored 1970s model Ford pickup. Deputies who responded to the call did not find any vehicle fitting that description.

"At this time we are still investigating the scene to try to figure out what really happened," Matheny said. "We are treating it as a crime scene."

Matheny declined to release any more information because of the ongoing investigation, but said he hopes to have more information to release later Thursday.
