Several people are willing to open up their wallets for a good cause, but how about opening up your veins?

United Blood Services is calling upon the community to come out and donate blood starting the day after Christmas.

The drives will run from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 26 and 27 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Decc. 28.

People can say whether they are donating on behalf of the Fire Department or the Police Department. The two compete every year to see who can get the most donations.

Since 2011, United Blood Services has started offering health information to donors, like height weight, pulse, Body Mass Index and hemoglobin. Donors can access that information securely at or use the website to make reservations. Some of those statistics could way for people to be aware of any health condition they should know about.
