From the Sept. 6, 1907 Gillette News:

Thos, Cioney, water superintendent of the Burlington, was in the city last Saturday. Tom recently had a narrow escape from death by ptomain poisoning, caused from eating canned beef. Tom says his experience, was amply sufficient to appease his appetite for this tinned delicacy for the balance of his earthly career.
