From the Dec. 15, 1916 Gillette News:

Fred Bell and Dick Jarvis circulated a petition for aid for their fellowtownsman Henry Vedder, who some few months ago had the misfortune of having both legs cut off when he fell under a moving train. The idea of the subscription we understand, is to enable Mr. Vedder to secure artificial limbs and to enable him to take up some line of work which he can handle in his crippled condition. That he has had the sympathy and right good will of the entire community was most fittingly expressed in a most substantial way, the gentleman circulating the subscription reporting that they had received and turned over to Mr. Vedder the very neat sum of $527, all of which was subscribed within a period of about two days time.
