From the July 05, 1907 Gillette News:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — John Beeman, a Negro preacher of Montgomery, Ala., applied to be allowed to die on the gallows for his brother, David, the date of execution being July 26. The preacher says he will go to heaven and his brother, being a bad man, might not. His sacrifice would have a tendency to convert his brother and both would thus get to heaven. The offer has caused a wave of sympathy for both and a petition is being circulated asking the governor to commute the sentence.
