Wyoming couldn’t have dialed up better weather for the first meet of the Gillette high school outdoor track and field season.

First-year girls coach Shelly Stremcha had forecast “rockin’ awesome weather.”

She was on the mark and so were the Camels Thursday afternoon at the Susan Windham Memorial Invitational in Gillette.

No team scores were kept, but the Camel boys sent the rank and file to the podium, placing in the top four spots in the pole vault. Both Dallas and Dustin Erisman were on a new pole to open the season, moving up to a 15-foot, 170 pole. Dallas cleared 14-feet, 6 inches to win the event. Dustin finished second with a vault of 14 feetm using the same pole.

Teammates Will Eichenberger (13-0) and Brad Eliason (12-6) were third and fourth, respectively.

“It’s a stiffer pole, which I wasn’t used to. But now that I’m in the rhythm with it, I like it,” Dallas said. “It’s not so much bending it as much as it comes down to a big knee drive.

“When you get on bigger poles like that, it’s a huge flight difference.”

The Erisman cousins contributed on the track as well. Dustin finished second in the 400-meter dash in one of the most competitive races of the day. Casper Natrona’s Ryan Schwieger leaned to nip Erisman at the finish line, winning in 51.38 seconds. Dustin was second at 51.49.

Dallas also finished third in a highly competitive 100 dash. Natrona’s Robert Counts (11.29) and Chance Jones (11.33) went one-two, respectively. Dallas was clocked at 11.45 in that event and also was second in the 200 dash.

It was just a solid day for the Camel boys. Other highlights included:

  • Zach Power, third in the 800 run (2:09.55).
  • Senior Jamon Rodrigues, third in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 runs.
  • Dalton McCann, third at 16.72 in the 100 high hurdles.
  • Walker Newell, third in the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.03).

The Camels picked up some added depth points in the field events. Seth Moerkerke went 39-1 to place third in the triple jump.

“This was my first time triple jumping, so I was pretty excited about it,” Moerkerke said. “The biggest thing is trying not to think, just go out and make all three of the jumps and remember everything. Beau Nutting is our top triple jumper and I’m just trying to get up there with him and score some points for the team.”

Camel girls cruise

Gillette’s girls won six events and looked as strong as you’d expect from the team that won the 2013 Wyoming state indoors championship title.

Makayla Pzinski won both the 100 and 200 dashes. Pzinski (12.58) and Randee Erb (12.93) gave the Camels a one-two finish in the 100. Pzinski earned a time of 26.60 in the 200, holding off Laramie’s Cassidy Meade, who finished second at 26.89.

Camel freshman Tabitha Simmons ran away from the field to win the 1,600 run in 5:28.92. Senior Sarah Sharp was second with a time of 5:38.30.

“Running at the varsity level is all about pace,” Simmons said. “It makes me work harder and I get better times.

“I think it also helps me in school too. During the season, my grades are really high. If I am running as fast as I can, it helps. Meets like this help with my confidence.”

  • Haley Urbatsch won the 400 with a time 1:03.32.
  • Junior Quinn DeStefano also ran away from a quality field in the 3,200, turning in a time of 11:46.20 for the victory.
  • Amy Merchen, who won the pole vault indoor state title, picked up where she left off. She cleared 10 feet to win the event Thursday.
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Maller had a personal best throw of 37-83⁄4 to win the shot put by 20 inches.

The Camel girls also picked up valuable depth points. Shyann Russell went 32-7 to finish second in the triple jump and Jessie Geer cleared 4-9 to place third in the high jump.

“I love high jumping,” Geer said. “I feel like I can jump really high and basketball helps me with that. Getting points is definitely important. We have a really good all-around team and the more field events I do, the more points I can get.”
