Campbell County High School senior Lars Jones carries a box of canned food Tuesday into the Council for Community Services' Soup Kitchen.

It is the first year the football team collected food instead of bars of soap from spectators at its annual scrimmage.

The Camels collected 589 items of food. Soup Kitchen manager Pete Scherr said this donation will allow him to stretch the food budget for the coming weeks.

"It's awesome. I started to think in my mind all the different meals I can make," he said. "It's a nice shot in the arm." Scherr estimated the food will provide for at least 10 meals.

At right, CCHS senior Ty McCartney and teammates sort boxes of food.

"It's better than collecting soap and we're able to open up with the community," McCartney says.
