2 moose die in fight over mate

Posted 10/15/12

JACKSON — State wildlife managers in northwest Wyoming say two bull moose battled to the death recently over a mate.

South Jackson game warden Jerry Longobardi received the report Sept. 29 and investigated the rare occurrence.

On the top of a butte, he found two bull moose dead side-by-side, antlers stuck together.

One moose died of a broken neck. The other animal’s cause of death was less clear.

Longobardi said it’s the first time he’s seen two moose died like that.

Wyoming Game and Fish wildlife biologist Doug Brimeyer says such double moose deaths are extremely unusual.

Longobardi says one moose had a rack with an unusual shape that could have caused the antlers to lock while they were sparring.
