3 small fires burn in northern Bighorns

Posted 11/8/12

RANCHESTER, Wyo. — Bighorn National Forest officials say they are investigating three small fires in the northern Bighorn Mountains they believe were human-caused.

One fire has burned about 85 acres of grass in a remote area 10 miles northwest of Ranchester. Firefighters monitoring that fire noticed another small fire Wednesday that was estimated at about one acre.

The other fire has burned about an acre 14 miles west of Parkman. Forest officials say the Ranchester Volunteer Fire Department and Forest Service firefighters were trying to contain that fire because it is burning in dry vegetation near private land.

Firefighters are getting help from cold nights and the local forecast calls for snow by this weekend.

The Forest Service is asking the public's help for any tips on how the three fires started.
