Campbell County Memorial Hospital has confirmed it has had three cases of Streptococcus A, also known as flesh-eating bacteria, in the past six weeks.
The hospital had denied the existence of the cases at the beginning of the month but Friday issued a press release confirming that, in fact, three cases have been identified.
Karen Clarke, hospital spokeswoman, could not comment on the condition of the patients citing privacy rules, only that the three are no longer patients at the hospital.
The hospital had been trying to reach its infectious disease specialist, Dr. Christopher Brown, on Friday but had not been able to reach him, said hospital CEO Bob Morasko.
Morasko would not comment on whether anyone died from the bacteria, saying it was on the advice of the hospital’s legal counsel.
Clarke said the disease is extremely hard to transmit from patient to patient, unlike diseases like tuberculosis. Flesh-eating bacteria can only be transmitted by coming in contact with “breaks in the skin or sores that allow the bacteria to get into tissue,” according to the hospital’s press release.
The hospital plans to have a public information session about the cases next week, although a time has not been set yet.
Can't find the Doctor, can't comment on anything, sounds like this Hospital is just brimming with confidence to the people of Campbell County
Lol this hospital is a joke more likely to die before they do anything for you.really shocked they haven't been shut don't agree with how they handle things and try to cover their butts when they mess up
Dale Wright just died from this and his daughter is in critical condition in Salt Lake City from the same thing. I'm sure the hospital isnt going to comment on that!
The hospital is a non profit organization that the public has every right to be involved with so maybe before you post negative comments about it, get involved!! I don't see how saying negative things is helping a situation at all?....And if it was your family members that had a flesh eating bacteria, perhaps you would want the privacy of the condition to be protected from rude negative people like yourselves =) The article clearly states that they made attempts to contact the Infectious Disease Specialist and were unable to. Sounds to me like they were TRYING. Doctors and everyone in the hospital are human to, so unless you have any better way to handle this situation, please keep your rude comments to yourself.
The only real thing that concerns me about this entire article is that they did not have a back up to the infectious disease Dr. I agree that this hospital is trying to the best that it can but one of the first things one should do in this type of business is plan for the unexpected. That means every critical position has a back up to it. Maybe they should have thought about that when the contracted with Dr. Brown. I would think it is time to reconsider that arrangement.
Kaldean82: She was told after her dad died that yes, it was that bacteria but it didn't come from there, a story they stuck with for at least a week. I dont care if the hospital is non-profit or not when it comes to something like this, people should know. How is this negative? May the hospital needs to work on cleaning itself up instead of expanding. I can have an opinion without attacking individuals, how about you?
Kaldean82: guess i have a different opinion of what rude is than you. For instance I believe the comment that you made is rude. I didnt attack an individual. You did. And most of Wright knows what happened, it isn't a secret. Maybe they should've tried to contact the Dr. sooner? Mr. Wright passed away August 29th I believe. The hospital had an article in the paper shortly after denying there was a problem. Might be a case of CYA.
Unfortunately for you... "just guessing" I am not going to give the response you want ;-) If you have a problem with the hospital, get on the board. I have no idea who you are and I do not care to bicker w/ anyone on here. I was simply saying, you have a problem, get involved and voice your opinion where it matters. Don't turn this into some drama fest crap.
Kaldean here i am being rude: you are uninformed and obtuse (look it up!). You go be on the board, you can vote to cover stuff up too! You have your head in the sand, or somewhere else equally as dark. If you cant see they have been lying---read the article again, this time move your lips--and see what was said! They have practically admitted they have been lying! WAKE UP! Or do you work there? hmmmmm. Maybe that's the reason you are in denial.
get a room!
