Bear tranquilized on university campus

Posted 9/13/12

MISSOULA — State wildlife officials tranquilized a young black bear that had climbed a tree near family housing on the University of Montana campus in Missoula.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials responded Wednesday evening after a child spotted the bear near a playground and a concerned parent called campus security.

After the bear was hit with the tranquilizer dart it climbed higher into the tree. It fell to the ground when the drugs took effect.

Wildlife officials plan to monitor the bear, which had an injured eye. If it is well enough, it will be released away from the city.
