Beulah, Wyo. population goes back to 33, on sign

Posted 10/30/12

CASPER — The population of Beulah is back to 33. At least on its highway sign.

The northeastern Wyoming hamlet has used the statistic to promote itself, with events like its fireworks displays starting at 33 minutes after the hour. T-shirts are also sold touting the tiny population.

But the 2010 U.S. Census counted 73 residents after including new subdivisions outside the historic boundaries of the town and the famous sign was changed.

Former Beulah resident Gregg Forsberg started a campaign to change the population back to 33, reaching out to the governor’s office among others. On Oct. 1, a new sign put the population back to 33.

A spokesman for Gov. Matt Mead told the Casper Star-Tribune that the governor worked with the transportation department to change the sign.
