Boy listed by dad as dead in obituary is alive

NEW CASTLE, Colo. — Police in New Castle are investigating whether any crimes were committed by a man who wrongly reported that his 7-year-old son had died.

The Post Independent reports Jason McCoy and a woman named Bethany Tharp submitted an obituary to the newspaper last week announcing that McCoy’s son, Seth, died in early August at a Denver hospital. Tharp listed herself as Seth’s mother in the obituary, telling the newspaper later that was in the process of adopting the boy when he died.

New Castle police Sgt. Julynn Saunders said Wednesday that Arapahoe County sheriff’s officials recently told her Seth is living in the Denver area with his mother. Jason McCoy’s ex-wife, Jennifer Stretch, says she’s not sure why McCoy would say their son had died.

Saunders says police are investigating.
