Camels qualify 11 swimmers into finals at state swim meet

The Class 4A girls state swimming and diving championships is a numbers game and right now, Cheyenne East has all its ducks in a row after Day 1.
The Thunderbirds are looking for their first state title since 1983 and their third state crown overall. They go into Friday’s second day at the Aquatic Center with 17 championship swims and four in the consolations.
But seven-time 4A state champion Gillette did qualify 11 in championship finals and nine in the consolations.
“It was an up and down day,” Camel coach Josh Bott said. “We had some real good swims and we had some swims we thought were going to be faster.
“The divers had a decent day. We got a lot of girls in the finals and consos tomorrow and we have a lot of room to move up.”
Four-time individual state champion Kelsey Ochsner set herself up for two more with the fast qualifying time in both the 100-yard butterfly (56.79 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (58.23).
The Gillette 200 medley relay also produced the fastest time of the day. Ochsner, Annie Waldum, Sage Riss and Emily Jewell combined for a time of 1:51.54.
The Camel 200 freestyle team produced the second-fastest qualifying time with a sensational leg by Shakira Dohse. Ochsner swam leadoff, followed by Peytin Brisch, Dohse and Jewell. They were good for a time of 1:43.32, just a fraction off Laramie’s top time of 1:43.21.
Waldum qualified for the championship finals in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50) and the 200 individual medley (2:22.27). Gillette also has three divers in the finals, Taysha VanPatten, Megan Volk and Kylie Izatt.
