CHEYENNE — Cheyenne is considering banning people from feeding ducks and geese in parks and other public property.
A city council committee backed the proposal Tuesday but it still must pass two more votes.
It’s one of several steps the city is looking at to control the migratory bird population.
They’ve been migrating less because they’ve become accustomed to being fed. Officials are concerned about the resulting bird waste which contains pathogens which can be transmitted to humans.
The city also plans to seek a state permit to prevent some eggs from hatching but it has to pass a feeding ban first. Violators could technically face up to six months in jail and a $750 fine but a judge would have discretion to set the punishment.
