GREELEY — Weld County commissioners oppose proposed new state rules that would require drilling rigs to be kept farther away from buildings.
The commissioners unanimously backed a resolution opposing the proposal, which they say would hurt farmers, ranchers and developers. They argue decisions on how far buildings should be from oil and gas drilling should be left to local governments because they have a better understanding of what’s needed in their communities.
The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has proposed keeping rigs at least 500 feet away from buildings. That’s up from 350 feet in populated areas and 150 feet in rural areas.
