Elk hunt under way in Grand Teton Park

JACKSON, Wyo. — Hunters killed 24 elk in the first week of this year's Grand Teton National Park elk hunt.
Grand Teton issued 725 licenses this year with the goal of hunters taking 300 elk. In the 2011 hunt, 750 permits were issued and 278 elk were taken.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports that the hunt started last week and is scheduled for eight weeks.
For the first time since Grand Teton was formed, the park has eliminated bull tags from the hunt.
Hunting is not allowed in most national parks. But the 1950 legislation that designated Grand Teton as a national park allows hunting of elk by hunters licensed by the state of Wyoming.
