MEDICINE BOW — Highway Patrol troopers say a Laramie man, who got high before driving, got really high before he wrecked his car Wednesday into a garage in Medicine Bow.

It may sound like a movie stunt, but Highway Patrol troopers say a 63-year-old Laramie man actually managed to launch his Ford Focus off a sloped intersection and onto a garage. The impact obliterated a large portion of the structure, lodging his small car inside above a position where a car normally would park.

The man, Steven Richardson, was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County in Rawlins and ticketed for driving while under the influence of a controlled substance, according to a report released Thursday by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Troopers were called to the crash scene to investigate reports that a car had crashed through a garage.

Once there, they found the small silver car sitting atop of crushed roofing, rafters and a garage door. They reconstructed the wreck and learned that Richardson was driving along Highway 487 at about 9 a.m. when he lost control.

Investigators report that Richardson’s car was going between 60 and 65 mph in a posted 30 mph zone when it left the roadway.

“The vehicle then ramped off the approach of Oak Street going airborne some 76 feet across Oak Street before landing in the garage,” Highway Patrol Sgt. Stephen Townsend wrote in a report. “If not the car, the entire garage appears from the photo to be a total loss.”

It is unclear to what extent Richardson was hurt during the wreck. Miraculously, there were no other injuries related to the crash.
