Women older than 40 should get mammograms once or twice a year. Many of them don’t.
A $11,661 grant from the Susan G. Komen foundation to Campbell County Public Health will allow many women to get a free screening.
It’s as simple as walking into the Campbell County Public Health on 4J Road and filling out an application. Public Health is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The application should only take 10 minutes to complete, said Pat David, senior public health nurse. Women who come in will get vouchers that they can use for mammograms at Campbell County Memorial Hospital. Those who are at risk can get free sonograms.
If a woman younger than 40 is worried about a breast abnormality, the health officials can help arrange a doctor’s visit.
This is the third grant that the Komen Foundation has made to the Campbell County Public Health District, which has helped women identify breast cancer in the past.
