George Peters, 85, of Buffalo died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the Veteran’s Home of Wyoming of natural causes.

Mr. Peters was born on May 10, 1927, in Barnwell, Ala., to Arthur and Grace Peters. He grew up and went to school in Mobile, Ala. He attended Gulf Post Military School and Barton Academy High School.

After high school he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served during WWII. After the war, he returned and was married on March 28, 1947, to Leila Florence Blue in Mobile and they made their home in Alabama, Texas, Montana and Wyoming.

Mr. Peters worked at various jobs including the construction of Yellowtail Dam and was also a chief of police in Montana. They settled in Gillette. His wife died in September of 1980. He then spent time in Arizona and, in 2005, moved to Buffalo where he lived until the time of his death.

Mr. Peters was known for his generosity, giving his last dollar if necessary or the shirt off his back. He could be found any given day having lunch at Duffy’s. He enjoyed spending time with his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, John Peters of Buffalo and Pat Peters of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Gail Ridley of Buffalo, Martha Bartlett of Buffalo and Megan Merchant of Canyon Lake, Calif.; one brother C.O. Peters of Fairhope, Ala.; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons, George and Marshall Peters, a daughter-in-law, one brother, and two sisters.

Donations in Mr. Peters’ memory may be made to the Veteran’s Home of Wyoming in care of the Adams Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo, WY.
