Mormon crickets by the thousand attacked Clearmont and threatened the gardens of its housewives this week, but the ravenous army was repelled by railroad tracks. The black cricket horde swarmed into town from the hills to the northwest, unhalted because the men employed in the extermination had used all their supply of poison dust. Weeds, grass and all other vegetation suffered from the crawling insect army. Only a few of the thousands of insects succeeded in crossing the rails.

Death appeared to hang from the underpass west of Gillette last Friday evening in the form of a dark, dismal body so close that night drivers could not be certain they would miss when the form suddenly loomed up into the headlights. After one driver had been frightened to within an inch of his life, Marshal Slim Hendricks was called to the scene, where it was found that a group had tied a dummy with stove pipe legs to the railroad tressel just high enough to skim over the tops of automobiles.

The report of another well blowing out of control electrified the Gillette community Wednesday at noon here. Reports were meager to the extent that the exact location could not be learned other than it was in the Recluse oil field area and was blowing gas and water, without any show of oil. Apparently the area has been cleared of practically all vehicles and extreme precautions taken to prevent the blow-out from catching fire.
The blow was said to be going to the top of the rig with 40 to 50 million cubic feet of gas per day escaping. Depth of the well was believed about 2,500 feet.
