At the beginning of the week, entrants for the title of Wyoming State Rodeo Queen numbered 14 including Miss Shirley Pickrel of Gillette, who is being sponsored by the Campbell County American Legion Post No. 42. Miss Pickrel won the title of “Miss Gillette” here at the Legion Round-Up on July 4 and 5 and will carry that name to the state fair rodeo. Judging for the State Rodeo Queen, as based on horsemanship, personality and appearance, will take place Friday, Emil Rohliff, chairman of the Legion Rodeo Queen committee has announced. The queen will be crowned at the dance Friday night. Three men from out of state have been selected to judge the contest, the winner of which is to receive $100 as well as additional prizes going to second choice of $75 and $50 for third. The ribbon with “Miss Gillette” hand painted on it and which Miss Pickrel will wear at the fair, was done on pink material and donated by Jake Benson to the Legion. The letters are blue, outlined in gold, which are colors of the American Legion.

Capt. Cynthia J. Van Auken and Sgt. Patricia R. Lollar, the WAC and WAF recruiting team for the state of Wyoming, visited Gillette last Monday. They were stationed at the Gillette post office to interview young women of this area who may be interested in a career in the Army or Air Force. Young women between the ages of 18 and 34, inclusive, who are high graduates and are single, are eligible to apply for enlistment in either branch, they said. Anyone interested WAC or WAF programs are invited to see them personally or write the recruiting office, 2002 Capitol Building, Cheyenne.

Power failures in various parts of Gillette on Monday and Tuesday were caused by unrelated accidents, according to the city administrator. Electricity was out for a short time Monday afternoon after an underground primary power was accidentally cut by Cundy Asphalt and Paving crews working in Heritage Village. An automobile accident early Tuesday morning caused power failures in south Gillette for about two hours, he added. Apparently, a car hit an electrical box on Lakeway Drive near Oakcrest, said Darrington. Several short power failures in the past weed have been blamed on lightning strikes.
