The lucky 4-Hers who took home a calf from last Wednesday’s calf catchum contest at the Campbell County Victory fair and rodeo were announced this week. The boys, who must raise their animals according to 4-H standards and return them to the fair next year for showing, are Jim Isenberger and Elmer Robinson. A total of eight calves were donated by county ranchers. Fred Oedekoven saw Jim Isenberger get his calf; the A.B. Hardin calf went Jerry Morel; Charles Weiss to Jerry Prazma; Earl Brown to Donald Odegard; Bill Harrod to Roy Rossback; Joe and Bill Maycock to Elmer Robinson; Glen and Lew Barlow to Norman Evans, and the W.R. Wright to Oliver Sutton.

Seven of the nation’s 10 largest coal mines are now located in Campbell County, including the biggest, Black Thunder mine near Wright. The rankings also placed Campbell County mines in second and third place. Campbell County’s 15 coal mines produced 114 million tons 13 percent of the nation’s total. That helped make Wyoming the second biggest coal producing state. Black Thunder, operated by Thunder Basin Coal Co., topped the pack for the second year in a row with 23.2 million tons. Kerr McGee’s Jacob Ranch, Black Thunder’s neighbor, was second with 12.6 million tons, while AMAX Coal Co’s Belle Ayre mine was a close third with 12.83 million tons.
Carter Mining Co.’s Rawhide mine was fifth, followed by AMAX’s Eagle Butte in sixth.

Sallie Ann Saunders and Louise Bundy, Curtis Burr, Ernie Rossie and Mrs. Jas Thompson, all of Gillette, will be among the professional and amateur talent that will have a chance to try out for the Horace Heidt show, to be held in Sheridan at the new Sheridan High School gym on Sept. 18. One of the Heidt Talent Scouts will arrive in Sheridan shortly to hold auditions for all entries, who will vie for one of the three places which will appear on Sept. 18 show at Sheridan. Winner of that contest will appear on one of the Heidt Sunday evening broadcasts. Auditions will be held at radio station KWYO in Sheridan on Sept. 8 and 9. Anyone 14 years of age and older and groups of not more than four may be auditioned and everyone is expected to bring their own accompanist. Tickets for the Horace Heidt 2 1/2 hour show may be obtained from the Gillette Clothing Co. in Gillette.
