Today marks the opening of the grouse season and many hunters have availed themselves of the opportunity, parties leaving early this morning in search of the birds that are reported plentiful, especially in the northern part of the country. The grouse season closes on Oct. 14. Open season for deer this year will be from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31. The season this year is later, as Oct. 1 to 15 was designed as open season for deer last year.

The J.A. McCue ranch reported a new meaning to “fresh eggs.” They found an egg in one of their hen’s nests last week that was so fresh that it stood up, and on the small end at that. Mrs. McCue brought the egg into the News Record and demonstrated the unique ability. Some called it a “golden” egg with all the gold settled in one end and others called it a “humpty-dumpty” egg, she said. Regardless what it might be called, it wasn’t old as the eggs that have been gathered regularly. Apparently the heavy part of the egg had settled to the small end causing it to roll to a near upright position on a flat surface.

“Smoke aloft” was the forecast for Gillette today, and the National Weather Service turned out to be very accurate, as smoke from fires in Yellowstone National Park socked in Gillette. Visibility was cut to two miles at 10:45 a.m., according to a report from the Gillette Campbell County Airport tower. Normally, visibility is more than 20 miles and the Big Horn Mountains are visible from the tower. Radio announcer Michael Berry of Y-100 joked this morning that, with all the smoke, everyone should wear barbecue aprons to work this morning.
