From the Oct. 15, 1942 News Record:
Negotiations have been completed whereby the City of Gillette will take over the CB&Q water ditch, according to Mayor Roy Montgomery. Montgomery stated that in the near future, C.L. Persons, assistant to the executive vice president of the railroad, will be in Gillette to meet with the City Council and complete the deed. Under the terms of the agreement, the city will get title to all the land through which the Burlington ditch runs, including the lake bed north of the tracks. According to Mayor Montgomery, the lake bed will be utilized in building a city park. The work of filling up the ditch will be postponed until after the war.

Improvement of major unimproved streets was the top priority for use of 1 percent sales tax money recommended by the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce and adopted last night by the City Council. Top priority should be given to redevelopment of Burma Avenue and Butler Spaeth Road, the chamber said. Recently, senior citizens petitioned the council for improvement of Gillette sidewalks and city administrator G.P. “Flip” McConnaughey suggested that priorities for sidewalk improvement might be taken from the list submitted by the seniors.
