From the Nov. 5, 1953 News Record:
Members of the Gillette Motel Association heard two representatives of the World Chamber of Commerce propose during a noon luncheon meeting Tuesday that U.S. Highway 16 be extended from Worland on to the Yellowstone Park. Highway 16 stretches 2,000 miles across the northern portion of the middlewest and west to end at Worland, just 150 miles short of its goal, the Yellowstone park. They proposed that the “16” markers be attached to U.S. Highway 20’s markets north of Worland and on into the park. They believed this would help to keep tourists traveling in Wyoming as they could go to the park on either U.S. 14 or 16 and return on the other. They pointed out that many tourists are lost to this section of Wyoming because they go out of the park into Montana or the southern routes.

The grand opening of Gillette’s completely new Ben Franklin store in downtown Gillette will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Gene Bannister, owner, announced this week. Bannister is a well known businessman of Gillette, having operated Gene’s Furniture for the past 15 years. The store is located at 310 S. Gillette Ave.. The Ben Franklin store will have a wide assortment of merchandise that will please everyone. Extensive lines will be offered in women’s and children’s apparel and accessories, fabrics, sewing notions, hobby crafts, small appliances, stationery, toiletries, toys and candy.

Wade Hartwigsen may have been one of the unsung heroes of last year’s Campbell County High School football team, but he’s finally gotten some recognition in his senior year. On Monday, coaches of the Eastern Wyoming Athletic Conference unanimously voted for Hartwigsen for the all-conference first-team defense. Hartwigsen, a 195-pound middle linebacker, and the captain of the Camels’ defense, proved to be the main hitman throughout the year. He was the only Gillette player selected to the first team, but five other Gillette players, all of them seniors, were selected to the second team offensive and defensive units. Clint Martin was a member of the all-conference second team as a tight end. Other second-team all-conference selections were safety Nick Carter, who led Gillette in interceptions; offensive linemen Pat Wrynn and Mark Sherrodd, and kick return specialist Kent Coulter, who broke one kickoff for a touchdown against Cheyenne East.
