From the Dec. 19, 1939 News Record:
Two CCC youths from Powell found themselves in plenty of trouble Sunday night after leading officers of Campbell and Crook counties on a merry chase, following a bold robbery attempt. The men, James B. Crawford, 17, and Robert Swenson, 20, robbed Millers Market of $28 in currency in the daring holdup about 6:30 in the evening. They entered the store on the pretext of purchasing a penny book of matches. While Charley Miller, the proprietor, was waiting on them, one of the youth dashed to the cash register, grabbed a handful of bills and the culprits ran to their car and sped away eastward. The youths stopped at Moorcroft to fill up with gas and Sheriff Glen Gill, who had been notified to watch for the car, attempted to apprehend the robbers. When the occupants refused to submit to his authority, he jumped on the running board. The youths started the car and headed across the platform, over the railroad tracks, finally wrecking in a gully south of the tracks. The culprits leaped out of the smashed car and ran across the prairie on foot. Sheriff Gill was reported to have shot once through the car, but no one was wounded. Gill was hurt, however, slightly, in the wreck. Campbell County officers Tex Martin and Charley Tyrell arrived after the wreck and a search was made about the depot. One of the men gave himself up due to the cold and the other was found shortly after on the depot roof. He came down voluntarily, also having suffered from the cold. The car the robbers were driving was stolen in Billings, the officers reported. Cawford’s home is in Brighton, Mass., and Swenson’s is in Sherborn, Mass. It is supposed the men were attempting to go home. It is understood that their record in CCC was “not very good”. Mr. Miller recovered all of the money with the exception of $1.
From the Dec. 12, 1968 News Record:
A Gillette postman was bitten by a dog Tuesday and Tom McMahon, assistant postmaster, said that mail will not be delivered in areas where a vicious dog is allowed to run loose. Postman John Mcguire was attacked and bitten on the chest by a dog that had broken a retaining chain when it jumped at him. McMahon said there had been other instances of dogs attacking the postman that had been reported.
