From the Jan. 1, 1948 News Record:
A few weeks ago the News-Record published the fact that it had been the recipient of a $1,000 bill from the Rev. H.G. Hallock in Shanghai, China, but it seems that was only the beginning! This week’s mail brought a note from U.S. Archibald of the Pine Tree ranch which went something like this: “Sometime ago we noticed an article in your paper about someone donating you a $1,000 dollar bill and was very amused at the pep it seemed to give the editor. Now if it is still open season on donations the Pine Tree ranch would like to contribute and hope you will accept it in the same spirit it is given. Here it is, a $100,000 bill ... now we sincerely hope receiving a bill like this you will not stop publication of the News-Record. “P.S. A relic from World War I ... the fruits of inflation!” The bill is a German mark in the 100,000 denomination and wouldn’t go far toward getting even one of those bucks Archibald has about his ranch. This currency became valueless after the first world war, so consequently in the face of his generosity we will still continue to work for a living.
From the Jan. 9, 1958 News Record:
A loophole in Montana’s uniform driver’s license code resulted in dismissal Friday of a charge filed against the owner of a car involved in a fatal pedestrian accident Dec. 26, at Billings, Mont. Patrick L. Kelly, 51-year-old Gillette sheepherder, was killed and a companion injured. On motion of Assistant City Attorney Richard J. Carstensen, Police Judge Otis L. Packwood dismissed a charge of permitting an unlicensed minor to drive. Facing the charge was David Reiter, 26, owner of a car driven by Delano Remmick, 16, who was cleared of negligence Thursday by a coroner’s jury. The youth testified at the inquest he had been driving without a license for two years. Carstensen said the driver’s license code “only covers a situation where a parent permits a child to drive.” Reiter still faces a police court jury trial Jan. 14 on a charge of furnishing beer to a minor. Remmick said he had “a couple of swallows” of beer about two hours before the accident.
From the Jan. 9, 1969 News Record:
A city police car, stopped to make a left turn off Gillette Avenue, was struck in the back when a car driven by Peggy Hladky, 17, slid on the icy streets about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 21, according to the investigating officer, Clif Ritchie, Wyoming highway patrolman. The police car, driven by Sgt. Dale Wolford, was northbound and waiting on approaching traffic before turning left at Fifth Street. Minor damage was reported to the patrol car and an estimated $120 damage to the Hladky car. There were no injures or citations.
