From the Feb. 6, 1941 News Record:
An item suitable fore the “Strange As It Seems” column came to light here this week. Two men, within five months of the same age, same color hair and eyes, approximately the same weight with the same name, yet no relation, discovered for the first time they would have to use their middle initial more often from now on. They are Howard Spellman of Spotted Horse and Howard Spellman, an employee at the American ranch, north of Gillette. The name is rather unusual, yet neither knew the other lived in this county until they were brought together last week. Each has a sister with the name Helen. A check-up of families for the past two generations revealed no relationship. Both are married and have no children.
From the Feb. 14, 1952 News Record:
In an effort to reduce vandalism the board of directors of the REA has posted a reward of $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person caught shooting or otherwise destroying insulators on the lines belonging to the association. Recently, one co-operative paid $225 to repair a broken insulator caused by a trigger-happy person with a rifle. In addition to the cost, it is the inconvenience to the patrons of being without power and lights. The REA says: “When you use a gun use your head. Don’t sabotage vital electric equipment.”
From the Feb. 1, 1962 News Record:
Sleigh riding by Gillette youngsters may now be enjoyed on a portion of Eighth Street, it was announced by Mrs. Harold Biggerstaff, president of the Community council. She stated that the city council has agreed to rope off Eighth Street between Ross and Gillette avenues on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on school days from 3 to 5 p.m. when the snow is good for sleighing.
