From the Feb. 20, 1941 News Record:
A serious fire was averted last week at the Homer Rich home when 19 CCC enrollees and two foremen put out a blaze there. Mrs. Rich was alone when she discovered the fire. Her call for help brought speedy aid from the men who were working near the house on the Rich mine project. The damage, which was confined to the roof, was said to be slight.

Donald K. Whisler, AKAN, USN, has recently been selected as the Sailor of the Month in the Navy’s defense force in Iceland, as announced by Commander M.A. Levin. Donald is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David R. Whisler of Rozet. Whisler, a member of the 1954 graduating class of the Rozet high school, entered the Navy on June 30 of the same year. Following his initial training at San Diego, Calif., he attended airman preparatory school at Norman, Okla., and aviation storekeeper school at Jacksonville, Fla. It was at Kaflavik airport, Iceland that his devotion to duty, value to service and initiative merited his selection as sailor of the month. He has served the assignment to Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 107 at this port since being assigned there in May 1955.

A mattress fire was the cause of a fire alarm on Tuesday at 11:50 a.m., according to Eugene Warlow, assistant fire chief. By the time the firefighters had reached the house (located nest to the Hitching Post Trailer park) the women occupant of the house had dragged the mattress out of a window. The blaze was quickly extinguished, and there was no other damage to the house.
