Gillette wrestler earns WWC honors for Wyoming

Gillette wrestler Tyler Cox has received the final Western Wrestling Conference weekly award of the season.
Cox, a sophomore at the University of Wyoming, won co-WWC Wrestler of the Week honors after he beat a highly ranked opponent by a major decision.
The 125-pound wrestler, ranked 18th in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, picked up a big win for Wyoming on Feb. 21 in the dual between the Cowboys and Air Force. He used three takedowns, a reversal, four near-fall points and 2:48 of riding time on the way to a 13-4 major decision over No. 11 Josh Martinez of Air Force.
That decision was critical to the Cowboys, who won a narrow 17-16 victory over Air Force.
The win also helped Cox avenge an earlier loss to Martinez this season.
Cox improved to 8-2 this season versus WWC opponents and has won 29 matches, including 16 by bonus points.
It's the second time this season Cox has been named Wrestler of the Week in the WWC. It's also the fifth time this season a Wyoming wrestler has earned the honor.
The WWC, in its seventh year of competition, includes Air Force, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
Also winning the honor this week, with Cox, was Josh Kreimier, 157, from Air Force.
