Gillette wrestler named athlete of the week
|
Alex Coolidge of Gillette was named athlete of the week at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, recently.
The 197-pound wrestler earned the honor by upsetting sixth-ranked Sam Johnson of Dubuque in a 7-2 decision on Feb. 2.
He brought Cornell fans to their feet with a takedown early in the match and again in the third period. His points helped the Rams earn a 25-7 win in the dual.
“That was a great win for Coolidge,” coach Mike Duroe said. “He does a good job getting up for big matches. He’s well prepared and studies opponents. He creates a game plan and executes it.”
Coolidge, a sophomore, is 21-8 this season heading into the Iowa Conference Wrestling Championships this weekend. He is ranked No. 8 in his weight class.
Cornell is ranked sixth in the nation at 11-4 overall this season.
He’s aiming for a spot in the NCAA Division III national championships.
