Mead says not enough info for Medicaid expansion

CHEYENNE — Gov. Matt Mead says he’s opposing the federal government’s proposal that Wyoming expand the Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act because federal officials haven’t given the state enough information.
Mead announced Friday in Cheyenne that he’s recommending state lawmakers reject $50 million in federal funds for the proposed Medicaid expansion.
The state now has about 77,000 people on Medicaid and the expansion could add another 30,000. The program currently costs about $500 million a year in Wyoming, split even between the state and federal governments.
Mead has protested for months that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has refused to respond to his concerns about the federal government’s ability to fund the program in the future.
Mead says Wyoming legislators will make the final decision on the expansion.
