Gov't acknowledges thousands released from jails

Posted 3/14/13

WASHINGTON — A senior Homeland Security Department official is telling Congress more than 2,000 illegal immigrants were released from immigration jails due to budget constraints during three weeks in February.

The figure cited by the director of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, John Morton, is significantly higher than the "few hundred" immigrants the Obama administration had acknowledged were released under the budget-savings process.

The Associated Press reported weeks ago that more than 2,000 illegal immigrants had been released since Feb. 15 and the government planned to release 3,000 more during March, but Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had said the AP's report was "not really accurate."

Morton acknowledged Thursday at a House appropriations hearing that 2,228 illegal immigrants had been released over the three-week period for what he called "solely budgetary reasons."
