Helene Sherry
Posted 9/9/12

Helene Sherry, 94, of Gillette, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Close to Home Hospice Hospitality House of natural causes.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date in Portland, Maine.

Local friends may gather at Primrose Pub from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Helene was born in Portland, Maine, on March 26, 1918, to Niels Peter and Anna Hansen Blom.

She graduated from Deering High School and Cumberland Business School.

She was employed by Bell Telephone Company, Publishers Clearinghouse, and worked at home transcribing youth chapter books into Braille.

She was also active in PTA and the Red Cross.

Helene married E. C. “Buzz” Sherry on Dec. 28, 1940, and lived in Maine, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, and Denver prior to Buzz passing in 1986.

She lived in Gillette since 2003, most recently at Primrose Assisted Living Center.

She and Buzz enjoyed travel for business and pleasure. They traveled the country and the world. England, Denmark, Italy and Australia were some of their favorites. Helene felt she had mastered the art of travel and packing when in London she was asked directions, mistaken as a native.

After Buzz died she continued to visit family and friends until at 83 her independent travels ended when the airways were shut down as she returned from Portland the morning of the 9/11 attacks.

Helene enjoyed being involved with her children’s lives and as the “go to” Grammie, she sat for all her grandchildren. Just as she enjoyed her children’s pursuits, she also took part in her grandchildren’s activities.

She is survived by Ned and Judy Sherry of Sewickley, Pa., and Sandy, Ted, and Steve; John and Gerri Sherry of Griffin, Ga., and Beth, Lynn, and Jay; Carole and Jim LaManna of Gillette, and Jake, Jed, and Jacey; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Jes and sister, Amy.

Memorials and condolences may be sent in Helene’s name to Walker Funeral Home, 410 Medical Arts Court, Gillette, WY 82716. Condolences also may be sent via the website to www.walkerfuneralgillette.com.
