CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A legislative committee is set to consider a bill that would strip the Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction post of much of its power.
The House Appropriations Committee has scheduled a hearing on the bill for 10 minutes after the full House adjourns on Tuesday. That's likely to be in the late afternoon.
Legislative leaders in both houses and in both parties are sponsoring the bill, Senate File 104. It would turn most of the important duties of the superintendent's post over to a director appointed by the governor.
Sponsors say Superintendent Cindy Hill has failed to follow legislative directives on education accountability measures.
But Hill says she's followed the Legislature's directives. She says that stripping her post of power would reduce the public's voice in public education.
