Jewel L. Van Woerkom Relf, 52, Piedmont, S.D., formerly of Gillette, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at the Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House.
She was born Nov. 1, 1960 ,to Roland and Sammilee (McCrady) Van Woerkom in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Jewel grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D., attending school in South Dakota and Nebraska until moving with her family to Gillette, Wyo., in 1974 and earned her GED.
She worked for the railroad until a back injury forced her into early retirement. Jewel was a bartender at the Center Bar in Gillette for 15 years before moving to Rapid City in 2000.
Jewel was an avid pool player, a loving mother and a very proud grandmother.
The family would like to give a very special thank you to the staff at Hospice House for all of their caring and kindness toward Jewel and the family.
She is survived by her significant other, Dean Relf, Piedmont; children, Kristen West and her husband, Jim, of Gillette, Machalla Relf of Piedmont, Lance L. Lehto and his wife, Becky, of Gillette, Zach Relf and Dean Relf, Jr., both of Piedmont, Les Relf and Tyler Relf, both of Savannah, Ga.; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; her mother, Sammilee Van Woerkom, Gillette; two brothers, Michael Van Woerkom and his wife Jessie and Max Van Woerkom both of Gillette; and her sister, Jacque Shchutt of Gillette.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roland in 2007.
A time with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel in Rapid City.
A Celebration of Life funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs, Chapel of Tranquility with Pastor Bob Hower, Foothills Community Baptist Church, officiating.
A memorial has been established to the children’s education fund.
