LaVerne Joseph Naughton, 89, formerly of Gillette, died Aug. 18, 2012, in Turlock, Calif.
Burial of cremains will be at Los Banes Cemetery in California at a later date.
Mr. Naughton was born July 9, 1923, in Pocahontas, Iowa, to Elmer and Teresa Naughton. He attended school in Glendive, Mont.
After World War II broke out, Mr. Naughton joined the Marine Corps. He served honorably, fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being severely wounded during the war.
After he was discharged, he moved to Oneida, S.D., and began a life-long career driving heavy equipment, something he loved to do.
He met and married the love of his life, Nina Anderson, in Lisbon, N.D., in 1950. They were married nearly 62 years and had six children. They divided their time between California and Campbell County.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Naughton of Stevenson, Calif.; sister, Arlene Greenhaulph; daughters Terry Cannon of Stevinson, Calif., Patty Nelms of Douglas, Katie Gettert of Gillette and Mary Ann Verderber of Atwater, Calif.; son John Naugthton of Douglas; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Lou Habit.
