Lawyer sues state public defender over firing

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne lawyer claims that Wyoming State Public Defender Diane Lozano terminated him because he ended a relationship with her years before.
Dion Custis charges in a federal lawsuit that Lozano and the Wyoming Public Defender's Office violated his civil rights and federal anti-discrimination laws by terminating him last year.
Custis says he had a relationship with Lozano from 1992 until he ended it in 1997. He states that he's a member of a protected class because he's a Hispanic male over age 40.
Lozano couldn't immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
Custis started working at the Public Defender's Office in 1994. He claims Lozano began discriminating against him once she was appointed state public defender in 2007.
