Man to be tried for vehicular homicide

Posted 10/31/12

CASPER — Authorities say a driver accused of causing a fatal crash on Interstate 25 near Bar Nunn was driving recklessly before the crash and appeared lethargic afterward.

Natrona County sheriff’s deputy David Hulshizer testified Tuesday that several packages of synthetic marijuana were found in Ryan Nordstorm’s vehicle after the Oct. 20 crash. According to the Casper Star-Tribune, he also said Nordstrom’s Chevrolet Cruze was at full throttle a half-second before he rear-ended a U-Haul being pulled by Daniel Barto of Butte, Mont.

Barto was killed, leaving behind a wife and two children.

Circuit Court Judge Michael Patchen ruled that Nordstrom should be tried for aggravated vehicular homicide in district court.

Nordstrom’s lawyer argued that speeding alone isn’t enough to prove recklessness. He said Nordstrom could have nodded off or been distracted.
