DEADWOOD — The Deadwood City Commission has approved money to shore up more historical retaining walls in the western South Dakota gambling town.
As of the end of October, nearly $400,000 had been spent on repairs. Last year, $586,000 was spent on the Retaining Wall Grant Program.
Deadwood was built in a steep-sided gulch in the Black Hills. Historic Preservation Officer Kevin Kuchenbecker says most historic structures in the old gold-mining town have retaining walls, and some of the walls themselves are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He says many have been around for a century.
Kuchenbecker says the city has been through a couple of wet years, and that has led to more of the walls starting to fail.
