News Record named Wyo.’s best daily

The News Record on Saturday night was named the best daily newspaper in Wyoming during the Wyoming Press Association’s convention in Cheyenne.
During the “major awards” portion of the association’s annual competition, the newspaper took home both the “general excellence” award and the “editorial excellence” award. In addition, the newspaper took home second place in “photographic excellence.”
Newspaper’s staff won a total of 25 individual awards in writing, advertising, photography, column writing, special sections, design and typography.
Among the honors were:
- First place: “In their honor,” a feature story by Nathan Payne, which tied for the award; headline writing; “Felony DUIs,” a news feature story by Nathan Payne; a house advertisement entitled “Lend A Hand in Hunger,” by Jamie Albrecht; “795 acres burn near Wright,” a spot news photo by Reiley Wooten; “City pool opens,” a feature photo by Steve Remich; and best webpage.
- Second place: “Rozet-area residents,” by Nathan Payne, a spot news story; “Medicare: Brace Yourself,” by Gabrielle Porter and Laura Hancock, tied for second in government issue reporting; “Love and Longing,” a feature story by Ashley Detrick which tied for second; Ann Turner, column writing; “Tough Call,” a sports news story by Jon Frank; “Winning Philosophy,” a sports feature story by Kathy Brown about wrestling coach Tom Seamans; front page design, Deb Sutton; “Look up,” a general news photo by Reiley Wooten; “Culinary Savvy,” a feature photo by Reiley Wooten; and “You Can Help,” a house advertisement by Jamie Albrecht.
- Honorable mention: Ten Who Made A Difference, the annual year-end section produced by the staff; and “Fighting Chance,” a photo story by Steve Remich.
