NEW YORK— The audience for the ABC, CBS and NBC newsmagazines is plummeting because of the time change and longer days.
The Nielsen company says the newscasts collectively had 11 percent fewer viewers last week than they did the week before. It didn't matter that it was a busy week with the election of a new pope. The simple act of moving the clock ahead because of daylight saving time is costly, primarily because that extra hour of daylight comes when the newscasts are televised.
The three shows lost a total of 2.6 million viewers, or just a little more than the number of people who watched NBC"s sitcom "Community" last week.
ABC had a solid week with the finale of "The Bachelor," its audience up 13 percent over the last finale.
