Officials find that rumors of threats are unfounded

Police and school officials say that rumors of threats to local schools were unfounded.
An investigation that began Monday after rumors of threats began to circulate on Facebook has found no credible threats to area schools, Police Sgt. Dirk Blackmer said.
“There was no validity at all and no evidence of any threat to the schools at all,” Blackmer said.
Police Tuesday tracked the origin of the rumors to an out-of-state source that posted something on Facebook. That post then was regurgitated by someone in Gillette on the social media site who did not realize the source of the information was not local, Police Lt. Brent Wasson said.
Nonetheless, law enforcement agencies in Campbell County have agreed with school officials to increase their visibility on district properties, according to Associate Superintendant for Instruction Boyd Brown.
“We’ve gotten kind of a heightened sense of awareness,” he said. “We have visited law enforcement and they will do more drive-throughs.”
That effort is not because of any actual threats, he said. Instead it is an effort to help parents, staff and the community feel more comfortable in the wake of the recent events in Connecticut.
As part of the effort, officers and deputies will park in school parking lots to complete their paperwork when they are not on calls.
Despite the invalidity of the rumors, police will pursue any perceived threats to local schools, Blackmer said.

There should be a police man in the parking lot of every school in Campbell county at all times. I realize this would be a huge expense but It would be worth it to keep our schools and children safe!!! I had read a thing about having veterans at the entrances of the schools as guards. They are well trained and would be able to handle a situation. We have door guards at the hospital why would we not have them at our schools. That would make me feel safer about sending our children to school. If you think about it the schools don't really have protection against the idiots that are coming out. And it has come to the point of having metal detectors at all of our schools. We as a county need to realize that the world is not a safe place any more and that includes Campbell County!!!
