Opponents seek to derail coal line bid

BILLINGS — Opponents of a proposed railroad that would open southeastern Montana’s coal fields to new mining are asking federal officials to revoke the project’s application.
The Rocker Six Cattle Co. and Northern Plains Resource Council filed a petition asking the Surface Transportation Board to seek a new application before making a decision on the proposed Tongue River Railroad.
They say a new plan to route the railroad through Colstrip significantly understates the number of coal-hauling trains that would use the line.
The planned railroad is co-owned by BNSF Railway, Arch Coal and candy-industry billionaire Forrest Mars, Jr.
BNSF, which would operate the line, says the Colstrip route would have fewer impacts than the original route through Miles City.
