Petition drive to repeal "Hill bill" underway

Posted 3/1/13

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Constitution Party is collecting signatures to repeal the new state law that removed state education superintendent Cindy Hill from office.

The effort's chairwoman, Jennifer Young of Torrington, told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle (http://bit.ly/Ww4FFY) the drive isn't about Hill. She believes the law violated the state constitution because it stripped the superintendent's office of much of its duties.

Opponents have a long road ahead of them to get a referendum on the November 2014 ballot. They need to get 37,606 signatures — 15 percent of voters in the last general election — by May 28.

The last statewide referendum on the ballot was in 1996. It dealt with term limits in a bill passed by lawmakers the year before and failed.

Hill is also challenging the constitutionality of the law.
