Police and utility department leaders will take on Public Works

Posted 9/7/12

The city’s Public Works Department will have two interim leaders until permanent managers can be hired.

Deputy Chief of Police Sawley Wilde will take over the department’s director position on Monday. Also, the city’s Electrical Services Manger Rick Lock in the utilities department will oversee both streets and parks divisions as an operations superintendent.

Neither man has experience in public works, but City Administrator Carter Napier said that he chose Wilde and Lock for their managerial abilities.

“I like these guys for this position because they are fundamentally, very sound managers. Their operations are running extremely well, and they’re running extremely well because of their direct involvement,” Napier said.

Former Public Works Director Rick Staskiewicz and former Streets Superintendent Joel Millers left the city Aug. 30. Staskiewicz said he resigned and Miller said that he was terminated.

Napier hopes that the new posts won’t last beyond six months, when the city can get permanent leaders in place. Until then, Wilde and Lock will assume the full responsibilities of their interim positions. They also will leave behind their respective duties from their existing positions in the police department and the utilities department to be fulfilled by other members of those departments.
