Funeral services for Robert V. Litzinger Jr., 86, of Hot Springs, S.D., will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Gillette Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Billy Wilson of New Life Wesleyan Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Mount Pisgah Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Gillette Memorial Chapel.
He died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, S.D., of natural causes.
Mr. Litzinger Jr. was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Robert and Pearl (Daniel) Litzinger. He was raised in the Hot Springs area and worked on the family ranch. He spent time breaking horses and participating in rodeos in his youth.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 3, 1946, and was a member of the 109th Company B Engineer Combat Battalion. He spent part of his service in Japan. While there, the unit had responsibility for commandeering the horses from the Japanese Emperor’s stables.
After his military service, he married Vera Rodgers in Carson City, Nev. They raised two children: James O. Litzinger and Susan L. Jurgensen. During this time, he was a self-employed contractor. After their children were grown and married, they spent more than 20 years on the highways of the USA working for moving companies and seeing most of the country. They made many friends during those years. He always stated that “he never met a stranger” and he meant it. No one crossing his path was ever a stranger. He was friendly to all and loved to chat with everyone. Children were drawn to him and he was crazy about them.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Jurgensen of Fenton, Ill.; brother, Donald Litzinger of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren; three great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; son, James Litzinger, parents and his youngest brother, Richard Litzinger.
