RAPID CITY, S.D. — Schools around South Dakota are closing early due to extreme heat.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for high temperatures Wednesday from the mid-90s in the northeast to near 110 degrees in the central part of the state.
The American News reports that several schools in the Aberdeen area are closing in the early afternoon. The Rapid City Journal reports that schools in that city also are closing about the same time.
Rapid City Superintendent Tim Mitchell says that when temperatures surpass 90 degrees in classrooms with no air conditioning, there are concerns about stress on students and teachers.
